Background of the Study
Women empowerment is a fundamental aspect of social and economic development, yet in many parts of Nigeria, including Wukari Local Government Area (LGA) in Taraba State, efforts to empower women are hindered by various geopolitical disparities. Geopolitical factors such as political affiliations, ethnic diversity, and regional power dynamics often shape the distribution of resources and access to opportunities, including those aimed at women’s empowerment (Ajayi & Olayemi, 2024). Wukari LGA, with its ethnic diversity and historical challenges, presents a unique context for understanding how geopolitical disparities impact women's access to empowerment programs. These include access to education, healthcare, financial resources, and participation in decision-making processes. This study aims to examine how the interplay of regional politics, ethnicity, and local governance affects women empowerment initiatives in Wukari.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
In Wukari LGA, women empowerment initiatives have been inconsistent, often influenced by the political and ethnic divisions within the region. While the national and state governments have made efforts to promote gender equality and empower women, local power dynamics and geographical differences significantly hinder the success of such initiatives. This research will investigate how these geopolitical disparities impact the accessibility and effectiveness of women empowerment programs in Wukari.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To explore how geopolitical disparities affect the implementation and effectiveness of women empowerment initiatives in Wukari LGA.
To assess the role of local political and ethnic factors in shaping women empowerment policies.
To recommend strategies to bridge geopolitical gaps and enhance the success of women empowerment programs in Wukari.
1.4 Research Questions
How do geopolitical disparities influence the success of women empowerment initiatives in Wukari LGA?
What role do local political and ethnic divisions play in shaping the implementation of women empowerment policies?
How can women empowerment initiatives in Wukari be enhanced by addressing these geopolitical challenges?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
Geopolitical disparities significantly affect the access and effectiveness of women empowerment initiatives in Wukari LGA.
Political and ethnic divisions within Wukari hinder the equitable distribution of resources for women empowerment.
Addressing geopolitical disparities will enhance the outcomes of women empowerment programs in Wukari.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities for women empowerment in regions affected by geopolitical disparities. By understanding the impact of local power structures and ethnic diversity, policymakers and development practitioners can create more inclusive and effective empowerment programs (Ajayi & Olayemi, 2024). The study will contribute to broader discussions on gender equality and regional development in Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on Wukari LGA, Taraba State, with a primary focus on women empowerment initiatives in the region. Limitations include challenges in accessing sensitive information due to local political tensions and cultural factors.
